How To Ensure TR19 Compliance For Your Hospitality Business

Anyone running a commercial kitchen will likely be familiar with the need to comply with TR19 guidance, but how can you ensure you are compliant with best practice when you operate a hospitality business?

First, let’s recap what TR19 compliance is. This is a best practice standard set by the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) for duct cleaning in commercial premises. This means it is used by professionals as the benchmark for how to clean vent systems.

There are two sets of guidelines under TR19 – one for air and one for grease. If you run a hospitality business, you need to be aware of both, but particularly the grease specifications given that unclean kitchen extractor systems can pose a fire risk.

When you arrange kitchen extractor fan cleaning you therefore want to ensure the organisation providing this service is TR19 compliant. This will mean they follow best practice for removing grease deposits from the extractor system.

As you can imagine, this is essential maintenance as regular cleaning – and therefore regular removal of the grease that builds up in the vents – will significantly lower the risk of a fire occurring in your commercial kitchen.

If you are also having the building’s wider ventilation system cleaned at the same time, you’ll need to ensure that this cleaning process complies with TR19’s air guidelines. These guidelines ensure that any building ventilation systems circulates clean air, which reduces the risk of allergens being spread or unpleasant odours.

While having your extractor fans and ducts professionally cleaned on a regular basis is essential, so too is maintaining those ducts in between deep cleans. Our team will share advice with you about how best to keep your extractor ducts clean and in good working order between each deep clean service.

When you’re organising cleaning for your commercial kitchen extractor fans, be sure to check that the company you’re using is working to TR19 best practice. Ask about what protocol they follow to be sure. We’re always happy to talk to our clients about how we follow TR19 guidelines.
